A Unifying Key

Unifying Key

Enter many quiet social settings, and a nervous awkwardness lingers in the air. Many people are reluctant to speak to those that they don’t know. Fidgety, and perhaps a bit fretful, some would rather find the nearest wall to cling to rather than mingle with others. Yet, invite music into the setting, and many of those apprehensive introverts become more relaxed and may even begin to socialize. Why?

Music provides a sense of connection. Whether transpiring through incredible instrumental arrangements or meaningful lyrics, music engages the bodies, minds, hearts, and souls of listeners and provides influential social experiences. In fact, many music aficionados have purported forming some of their closest friendships while listening to music or attending concerts. However, even for those who are not as invested into the music to which they are listening, the catchy fluctuation of tones can calm the nerves and enhance interaction. Music helps us to relate to one another through shared emotions and encounters. Music brings synchrony as it invites the body and mind to keep time with the beat, and as those that gather together share some of the same experiences of synchronizing to the music, they may begin to feel more at ease with others. They may also experience uplifted states of mood as happiness can be found in social connection. Moreover, music may help people to not only interact but also collaborate as they work harmoniously together.
