We come into this world with only the experiences that we had in the wombs, and, from that point, everything we know, we’ve learned from our education or experiences on our journeys. We hear, see, taste, smell, and touch a variety of stimuli to help us discover about ourselves, others, and the world in which we live; we listen and read to expand our knowledge; and we communicate globally, through such means as the World Wide Web, to learn from the experiences of others. While the amount of information to which we are exposed is astronomical, the mind is extraordinarily capable of processing, storing, and recalling the information. Yet, sometimes we face roadblocks on the pathway of discovery, and we need assistance with being able to comprehend what we’ve learned and to apply the information to our lives. Whether stemming from improper brain functioning or a number of other factors, learning challenges confront many people on an ongoing basis leaving some to feel defeated and helpless. Yet, everybody has the ability to learn as long as they are willing to extend the effort. In this section, we will discuss some methods that may be implemented to achieve academic success despite the obstacles which may be associated with learning disabilities, including ADHD.

Music and Learning

The brain is a powerful machine. You can register a plethora of information and file it with the potential to recall it years later. Music not only helps us process information but it also helps in the recalling of information. Not only can the brain remember the lyrics, but it also remembers the tune through beat, harmony, and melody, and it associates the tune with where it was first heard. Although there are many songs from different time periods and each with its own unique arrangement, our brains are very effective at not only recalling but also differentiating the songs. In fact, did you know that many historical accounts were actually written as music meant to be sung? In a similar manner, music has the ability to help us remember bits of information more effectively and efficiently. Therefore, the key in expanding our learning could very well be the music which we listen to. Many scientific studies support this concept. While loud music could prove to be distracting, softly played music may be exactly what students need while completing their homework or studying in order to help them retain the information required to succeed in class. What volume is the best to maintain? Experimentation and monitoring may be your best method of assessing how effective the music listened to is in assisting in the learning process. While experimenting, also use different types of music. As people are different and learn uniquely, it may be that the music which may help them to store and recall information may also vary.
