Discovering Who You Are

Discovering Who You Are

“Knowing thyself, that is the greatest wisdom.” – Galileo Galilei

I’ve spent a lifetime trying to be what others thought I could be,
Trying to please others, trying to make them happy.
Time after time, I’d give up, give in, let others dictate my fate,
A sea of potential living on a shallow plate.
Confined and insecure, there was no place to go
When fearing to leave what I had grown accustomed to, but now I know
That it’s OK to be more than others think of me –
To live, to dream, to make myself happy.

One key quality of such forms of art as music is the ability to help people come to the discovery of who they are. Whether it be through its relatable lyrics or its other components, such as rhythm, music provides listeners with a free space in which they are able to find themselves without worrying what others will think of them. Music provides them with unconditional love, guidance, and acceptance. It gives them the courage to be honest with themselves through the process of discovering who they are. It helps them realize their beliefs, values for which they stand, and passion. It encourages them to make decisions involving their paths in life and to seek out groups that will support them in following their hearts’ desires. Sometimes the path to discovery is not easy because norms dictate that we progress forward when a return to the past may be what is needed for growth to occur. For example, people who have lost their way while attempting to reach their aspirations may need to reflect on the past in order to determine why the paths that they have chosen were the ones that seemed to make them the most passionate. If they realize that their aspirations are no longer what they once were, they are able to change their paths and attempt to reach their new goals. While reassessing whether their current paths are right for them, people should determine what motivates them and how they are able to best share their unique abilities with the world.
